Women in AI: Building a more inclusive future
During Equality Days in February, EDIH Iceland hosted a Women in AI event at Hannesarholt, bringing together people interested in exploring the opportunities and challenges shaping the future of artificial intelligence.
The event focused on both the potential and limitations of AI, addressing critical topics such as bias in AI systems, the importance of responsible development, and the need for diverse perspectives in shaping emerging technologies. A central theme throughout the discussion was how to encourage more women to take on active roles and leadership positions within the field of AI.
Inspiring keynote and diverse panel
We were honoured to welcome María Rún Bjarnadóttir, representing UN Women Iceland, as keynote speaker. Stepping in at short notice, she set a thoughtful and engaging tone for the evening.
The panel discussion featured:
- Ólöf Rún Kristjánsdóttir, WomenTechIceland
- Stefán Ólafsson, Reykjavik University
- Helga Hauksdóttir, Ministry of Culture, Innovation and Higher Education
Together, they brought a wide range of perspectives on the societal impact of AI, the responsibility that comes with its development, and the importance of inclusive participation in shaping its future.
An engaged and collaborative dialogue
While the event was initially designed to include smaller roundtable discussions, the strong engagement from attendees led to a dynamic, open dialogue with the full audience participating directly in the discussion. This created an inclusive and collaborative atmosphere, reflecting the kind of community needed to drive meaningful change in the AI space.
The conversation also highlighted the important role of male allies in advancing gender equality in technology. Their participation is essential in building a more balanced and inclusive AI ecosystem.
Looking ahead
This was our second event for Women in AI, and as interest in the topic continues to grow, so does the opportunity to build a stronger, more inclusive community. We invite those interested to join the
Women in AI working group and stay informed about upcoming initiatives and opportunities to get involved by signing up for our
