Connecting Research, SMEs, and Investment to Advance Scientific Innovation

On December 12, Auðna TTO Iceland hosted an engaging event in collaboration with EDIH-IS titled The Path to Scientific Innovation at Eiríksdóttir in Gróska.

The event brought together researchers, SMEs, technology transfer professionals, and investors to strengthen collaboration around scientific innovation in Iceland. Aligned with the mission of the European Digital Innovation Hub (EDIH), the event focused on supporting research-driven SMEs by improving access to expertise, networks, and investment.

Opening remarks were delivered by Ásdís Halla Bragadóttir, Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Higher Education, Science and Innovation, who highlighted the public sector’s role in enabling strong innovation ecosystems and supporting research with societal and economic impact.

The program featured four speakers offering perspectives across the innovation value chain. Dr. Hans Tómas Björnsson shared insights from building Kaldur Therapeutics and navigating international technology transfer. Egill Skúlason discussed the use of supercomputing in chemical engineering and how Auðna has supported the commercialization of his research. Tom Flanagan from University College Dublin presented best practices in knowledge transfer, while Milla Koistinaho from Innovestor (Finland) provided an investor’s perspective on deep-tech and the importance of long-term support for science-based SMEs.

A panel discussion moderated by Bergur Ebbi Benediktsson brought together speakers alongside Einar Mäntylä, CEO of Auðna, and Jón Ingi Bergsteinsson from the Icelandic Business Angel Network (IceBAN). The discussion explored how researchers and SMEs can be better supported, the value of international experience, and the role of strong local and Nordic networks in strengthening innovation and investment readiness.

As a direct follow-up and in line with EDIH objectives, Auðna organized targeted meetings the following day between Icelandic SMEs, startups, and Milla Koistinaho. These meetings aimed to strengthen investor connections, promote Icelandic innovation, and support SMEs on their path from research to market.

What a way to end a great year here at Auðna!
