Mondays with MATLAB – Nordic HPC Workshops

/

A three series workshop on parallel computing and AI using large compute resources.

Workshop Overview:

Does your project involve large computations or training Machine Learning and Deep Learning

models? Are you interested in speeding up your code by harnessing a High-Performance Computing

(HPC) resource near you?

MathWorks is partnering with NAISS Sweden, DTU Denmark, CSC Finland, NRIS Norway, IHPC

Iceland and RTU HPC, Latvia to bring you a three series workshop on parallel computing and AI using

large compute resources –– including hands-on exercises where you will learn how to effectively use

MATLAB and MATLAB Parallel Server to speed up your computations.

Workshop Series:

There will be three workshops in the series:

Workshop 1: Parallel Computing with MATLAB - 12 May 2025

Workshop 1 will introduce the basics of parallel computing with MATLAB.

Workshop 2: MATLAB usage in HPC Computing Environment  -   8 September, Iceland

Workshop 2 will involve sessions where participants will get to learn how to submit jobs on an

HPC cluster that is most relevant to them based on their country. Icelandic Researchers will

have the opportunity to submit hands-on jobs on the Icelandic national computing cluster

provided by Icelandic Research e-Infrastructure (IREI).

Workshop 3: Building Scalable AI Workflows with MATLAB  - 22 September, Iceland

Workshop 3 will be a hands-on session that will guide you through building end-to-end AI

workflows with MATLAB, from no-code machine learning to HPC-scaled deep learning and

system-level deployment. You will explore real-world demos and see how MATLAB simplifies

and accelerates AI research. Icelandic Researchers will have the opportunity to submit

hands-on jobs on the Icelandic national computing cluster provided by Icelandic Research

e-Infrastructure (IREI).

More about IHPC:

IHPC (Icelandic High-Performance Computing https://www.ihpc.is/ ) is the National Competence

Center for HPC & AI in Iceland partly funded by the EuroHPC Joint Undertaking EuroCC project. The

IHPC activities are increasing in academia and industry that also includes related areas such as

Artificial Intelligence (AI), Machine Learning (ML), Data Analytics, and Data Sciences. As a result, the

IHPC community members created Icelandic Simulation and Data Labs (SDLs), including academic

and industrial partners.

More about IREI:

IREI (Icelandic Research e-Infrastucture https://irhpcwiki.hi.is/) is a project funded by the Icelandic

Centre of Research infrastructure fund with the goal to provide computer resources, data storage and

user support to scientific research in Iceland. The project is hosted at the Division of Information

Technology (UTS) of the University of Iceland.

In the autumn of 2025 Reykjavik University will, for the first time, offer a master’s programme in artificial intelligence at RU’s Department of Computer Science. Although RU has for years been a leader in AI education and research, this is a study line and an addition to the existing graduate programs currently taught within the department. The master’s program in AI is designed to provide students with a deep understanding and skillset in developing, training, and applying artificial intelligence for a wide range of purposes. In addition, students will be introduced to the ethical challenges associated with the development and use of AI and will learn how to approach these challenges in a responsible manner. "It is really important that ambitious and forward-thinking graduate studies are available in Iceland. By strengthening expertise in AI, we enhance the country's international competitiveness and increase opportunities for innovation domestically. With this new master's program in artificial intelligence, we at RU are doing our part to help prepare society for the future,” says Henning Arnór Úlfarsson, Chair of the Department of Computer Science at Reykjavik University. Alongside this new study line, a new scholarship has also been established for the AI master’s program, with a focus on language technology: MSc in Artificial Intelligence with an emphasis on Language Technology (AILT). The scholarship is named after the late Baldur Jónsson, professor of Icelandic studies, who led the first language technology project carried out in Iceland. This year marks 50 years since the results of that project were published in the work “Tíðni orða í Hreiðrinu: tilraunaverkefni í máltölvun” in 1975. As a result, Icelandic language technology celebrates its 50th anniversary this year. The scholarship amount is equivalent to the tuition fees of master's students and is granted for one academic year at a time. It will be renewed for the second year of study if the recipient demonstrates strong academic performance. Eligibility will be assessed based on education, relevant background, and submitted materials. Here you can find more information and a link to registration.
